Dyslexia is not limited to childhood. Left untreated, a lifetime of struggle ensues.
Is my child reading and writing like other kids?
Your child is so smart and understands things that are beyond his age and grade level.
He’s creative and finds surprisingly good solutions, but…
…he’s struggling to read and write. As much as he tries, he can’t read and write like his classmates. In fact, getting him to read is like pulling teeth!
The school isn’t helping.
You brought your child’s problem to the school’s attention back in kindergarten.
While other children were learning letters and their sounds, your child fell behind.
Now he’s in second grade, but the teachers keep saying to give it time. He needs to focus and try harder.
My child is frustrated and depressed.
You see him getting frustrated, and it’s affecting his self-confidence.
It breaks your heart to hear him say that he’s stupid and not good enough.
You’ve tried tutors, but he still can’t read words.
Left untreated, dyslexia may result in behavior problems and depression.
Hunter’s story is not unusual.
Hunter walked into my office, unsmiling, nervous, and a little defensive. He had been working with a tutor for over a year. Although he could identify letters and their sounds quickly, he didn’t know how to put those sounds together to read even small words.
Hunter had a great memory that helped him on spelling tests. Other times, he saw the first letter and guessed at the word, but that didn’t work too well. School made Hunter feel dumb.
Soon after we started working together, Hunter began reading and writing small words. He progressed to longer words and sentences. He then moved on to short stories and was answering comprehension questions.
Hunter’s self-confidence soared with his newly developing skills. His parents were surprised when their little “genius” looked forward to going to school.
