Providing Clarity and Confidence for Your Therapy Journey

Speech, Language & Dyslexia Therapy: What to Know Before You Begin

Have questions about therapy? We’ve got answers. From understanding how it works to knowing what to expect in a session, these FAQs are here to guide you toward clarity and confidence in your therapy journey.

Speech and Language Therapy

A speech-language pathologist (SLP) helps people of all ages improve how they speak, understand, and communicate. For children, this may include building vocabulary, improving speech clarity, and strengthening grammar and social communication. For adults, therapy may focus on regaining communication after a stroke, managing stuttering, or improving voice quality.
The goal is always the same: to help you or your child feel confident, understood, and successful in daily interactions.

I work with school-aged children, teens, and adults. Therapy is always tailored to each individual’s age, needs, and goals, whether it’s improving articulation, language processing, reading, writing, or communication confidence.

Here are some common signs your child may benefit from speech therapy:

  • Mispronounces sounds or words frequently
  • Struggles to follow directions or answer questions
  • Has trouble expressing thoughts clearly
  • Gets frustrated when trying to communicate
  • Avoids social interaction or becomes withdrawn

If any of these sound familiar, an early evaluation can make a big difference. Therapy is available in-person and online to fit your schedule.

Each session includes a mix of structured activities and play-based learning (for children) or real-world practice (for adults), based on individual needs. I continually assess progress and adjust strategies to maximize success. The goal is consistent improvement and growing confidence.

Dyslexia Therapy FAQs

Look for these signs:

  • Difficulty with rhyming, letter sounds, or word recall
  • Often substitutes words with other words that have similar meanings
  • Trouble recognizing high-frequency words (such as “are” or “an”)
  • Reads slowly or avoids reading altogether
  • Family history of reading challenges
  • Avoids reading for enjoyment or personal interest

Early intervention can prevent years of academic struggle. If you’re unsure, I offer assessments to help clarify what’s going on.

Tutoring focuses on homework help. Dyslexia therapy goes deeper. It addresses the root of reading struggles using research-backed methods. I’m trained in Orton-Gillingham, a structured, multi-sensory approach proven to help kids and adults build real reading, spelling, and writing skills – not just get through assignments.

I use a structured literacy approach grounded in:

  • Explicit phonics instruction
  • Multi-sensory techniques (sight, sound, movement)
  • Step-by-step lessons that build on each other
  • Cumulative practice to boost fluency and memory

This method helps strengthen reading comprehension, spelling, and confidence.

Absolutely! The brain can learn and adapt at any age. Adult clients improve reading fluency, spelling, and comprehension using the same methods I use with kids, just tailored for grown-up goals and real-life application.

Virtual Dyslexia Session FAQs

Yes! With the right tools and strategies, virtual sessions can be just as effective as in-person. I keep sessions interactive and personalized with guided practice, feedback, and constant progress monitoring.

That said, virtual therapy works best for students who have a solid attention span and can stay engaged on screen. Even then, we’ve found it’s most successful when a parent or caregiver is nearby – not to participate, but simply to be present and help the child stay on task.

Just a few basics:

  • A strong internet connection
  • Access to email for session links
  • A whiteboard + markers for writing practice

That’s it. From there, I guide everything step-by-step to ensure each session is smooth, productive, and tailored to your child’s learning.

General FAQs

I offer sessions in-person in Wayne, NJ, and virtually across New Jersey and beyond. My office is at:
1501 Hamburg Tpk, Suite 414, Wayne, NJ

Depending on your plan, some times dyslexia is covered and many families are able to receive partial- or even full-coverage. In instances where insurance is not an option, I do provide a Superbill for clients who wish to seek reimbursement.

Every person is different, but consistency is key. Most clients attend 2 sessions per week, and I provide home practice for reinforcement. Progress depends on age, diagnosis, motivation, and how regularly we work together, but with steady effort, real change happens.
